Grand Opening is Friday-Sunday at Strawberry Festival!

It's happening:  feeding Vashon and visitors at the biggest event on the rock is exciting and intimidating. We're planning and prepping lots of great food! See our menu page for the lineup.

Orca Eats will be parked on the Highway at the 4-way stop (Bank Road) - in what is usually the right turn lane by US Bank. We're right by the US Bank music stage, so it's perfect for the street dances on Friday and Saturday nights and all day Saturday and Sunday. We'll get to watch the parade!

Come down and listen, dance, visit with friends and neighbors. Get a bite to eat!
Friday's street dance at the US Bank Stage features Van Redeker Band 9:00pm-Midnight.
Saturday's street dance in front of Sporty's features the Portage Fill 7:00-9:00 pm.
Saturday's street dance at the US Bank Stage features The Great Divide 9:00-Midnight.

Any day now!

We took a couple of steps backwards and several steps forward. The biggest effort came with replacing our new, incorrectly installed exhaust system. The new big exhaust fan is now up on the food truck roof, and we're about to breathe a sigh of relief. About to. We'll keep you posted!

"In the 'hood" usually means the neighborhood. Here we are literally in the exhaust hood installing the new stainless hood ceiling in prep for the exhaust fan, sitting on the flat top grill and the burners. Of course they're not turned on!

Lots of good news!

Finally, some great news and progress! We changed commissary kitchens to avoid most of the delays and expenses and unknowns with the Health Department permitting, and that is a great step. The Health Department was very efficient when receiving our permit application after the commissary wrinkles were ironed out, and they estimated two weeks for plan approval (permit). Lo and behold, it was just one week to receiving the plan approval for our permit. Hooray!!

Next up:  Labor & Industries inspection and then the final pre-operational Health inspection.

This morning we had the propane tanks filled down the street at Vashon Energy. They were very nice, helpful and appreciative of the great work done on the LP piping and tank installation. Hooray!  (see Alex waving as he drives by?)

Wedding + Food Truck = Happy Celebration

Orca Eats brings tasty food to weddings this summer, and part of the fun is the planning. Brides, grooms, brides & grooms, parents, aunts and uncles, all get in on the conversation. It's exciting, interesting and fun to present menu ideas to work with the mood, the Vashon Island setting and tone of the event. We are glad to be trusted to roll in with great food to celebrate. Some are at private homes, some at wedding venues. Some are wedding reception dinners, some are rehearsal-welcome dinners. We're excited to help couples share the Northwest with their guests, and it's great fun to express regional pride through fresh, seasonal food.

Delicious Mustard and Company

Mustard and Company met Orca Eats on Instagram. How mod! They liked our pork tenderloin sandwich, and we thought local mustard sounded like a great addition to Orca Eats' offerings. A few weeks later, we met in person and - wow! - they make delicious and varied mustards. Fresh, raw and bold, Mustard and Co.'s mustards run the gamut from Classic to Black Truffle, with Honey Curry (my favorite), Smoky BBQ and Honey Dill completing the line up. They also stock local wildflower honey... thank you, busy bees in Lakewood. Mustard and Co.'s items are available at fine retailers and online now. When Orca Eats opens, try mustard on a brat and buy a jar to take home from our shelves on the food truck! I think that's called delicious convenience, don't you?

Happiness: A Well Built Propane System and a Big Event in June

Happiness is having the licensed HVAC pro test the propane lines and find no leaks! We knew it was solid after it held air pressure for 48 hours, but having the special form signed by the professional for future presentation to the inspection team at Labor & Industries is really exciting!

It may not look exciting, but this is one of the many propane pipes safely installed!

Maybe you've wondered what's taken so long to open Orca Eats. The food truck kitchen was built and arrived and looked very nice, but upon examination and during our application for state L&I certification we discovered that it was not built correctly. Tear out. Re-design. Fabricate. Buy new parts and components. Install. Test. Adjust. It's been a long process of education and building, but it's in high gear now, and we're looking towards inspections in the not too distant future.

Meanwhile, Orca Eats was asked to be a vendor at the Vashon Sheepdog Trials! Of course we said "yes, please!" June 9-12, 2016 at Misty Isle's field. Visit the Trials' website for more info, terrific photos and more.

We Call Her Oona

We call the food truck Oona. The food truck business is Orca Eats, but the actual truck is Oona. Sometimes when driving or working on the truck we encourage Oona and tell her she's doing a fine job. She's the other co-worker, the big black Chevy with white accents. Oona the orca.

Other important Oonas are:  Lady Oona Chaplin and Disney's Princess Oona. We'll post a photo soon.
